Let’s say you’re planning a vacation that does not include an implosion — literally, yes, but especially figuratively. There’s nothing worse than being in an exotic locale with your fight-or-flight system activated because of a money, room, or flight issue.

That’s why it’s so important to make sure you have multiple ways to pay for things. Even if your vacation fund is small, I recommend splitting it between your card and cash. For added security, there are money belts if you want to be secretive — as well as more purse-like money and passport carriers that you can wear around your neck or on the inside of your pants.

Packing in 2023 has evolved into an art form, with some people swearing by vacuum packing (placing each item in a plastic bag and sucking out all the air). That has always seemed a little wasteful to me, so I tend to search for packing videos on YouTube and try my hand at clothes-origami.

Based on my personal experiences, cloth suitcases should be shunned in favor of hard-shelled models. If you’re carrying anything precious — including electronics — you can reduce the likelihood of it getting smashed in a hard-shelled suitcase. Of course, no discussion of luggage is complete without mentioning Air Tags, which we wrote about in “Air Tags v. Smart Tags.”

Another often overlooked best practice is to make copies of your documents — one physical copy and one copy on your phone. This might save you the hassle of reaching into the depths of your pants to retrieve your passport, plus it would only help you in the unlikely event that you lost it.

Once you’re at your destination, I recommend not making it all about taking pictures. Make a conscious effort to just experience things as they happen. I have heard stories of people having miserable times because their travel partner cared more about taking “postable” pictures and then…posting them. Personally, I’ve done that and I always end up with dozens of pictures that I never looked at.
