Now that I am a Certified Money Coach®, I can put my gift for gab to good use by helping people figure out their relationship with money. I’ve documented my journey becoming a Certified Money Coach® (CMC®), including the concept of money types and looking back to childhood to explain present-day behaviors. Today I am proud to announce my first series of coaching circles to help put these ideas into practice!

Nowadays, people marvel at how together my financial house is (just kidding; no one has ever said that, but I know they are thinking it), but for a big part of my life, I was very irresponsible when it came to money. I had a business whose books I left in the capable hands of a CPA, and I put it out of my mind. Likewise, in doing the family finances with my ex-husband, I didn’t want to be bothered. I was happy to let other people take care of everything financial for me.

It all came to a head when I discovered that the trustworthy CPA I hired didn’t know how to balance a checkbook or calculate taxes due. And my very artistically inclined ex-husband was similarly untalented in the finance department. My strategy was failing me, and within a few years I closed the business and ended the marriage.

Freshly divorced, I knew I had to pull myself up by the bootstraps and take responsibility for my own finances — at least if I didn’t want to live under a bridge. Here I am, 12 years later, and I’ve almost caught up to where I should be in retirement planning, and my intuition tells me I won’t end up living under a bridge, or in a van down by the river, etc., etc.

Money Coaching Circles: Fall, 2017

Research has shown that people learn better when they laugh, and I intend to keep these circles as lighthearted as possible — but there will be some homework:

  • Money Bio: Participants tell the story of their relationship with money, from as far back as they can remember.
  • Family: Students list all the money-related qualities (positive or negative) of their parents or anybody else that left an impact on their life growing up.
  • Self: Participants list their own financial attributes and where in childhood they think each one originates from.

Once we’re all together at the circle, other assignments include a life inventory, forgiveness exercises, and large scale imaging (What would you do if you won the lottery?). To complete the session, participants will create a plan of action.

Dates for these Coaching Circles are still to be determined. If you’d like more information or would like me to present to your community please contact me!
