A lot goes into this — and by this I mean me. In addition to the very expensive lattes, I rely on other people for hair styling, fixing things in my townhouse, cleaning my townhouse…I’m really composed of other people. That’s why I love to give back to them at the end of the year.
There are countless holiday tipping guides online, but I thought I’d present it in a different way. Below you’ll find service providers sorted into their appropriate tipping amounts:
Up to $80
- Newspaper delivery
- Handyman
- Superintendent
- Yard workers
- Doorman
The Cost of One Session
- Baby sitter
- Barber
- Massage therapist
- Pet groomer
- Pool cleaner
One Week’s Wages
- Housekeeper
- Nanny
- Dog walker
Up to One Month’s Wages
- Personal medical worker
Tipping is Discouraged or Banned
- Cable company workers
- Postal Service employees
- Waste management workers
- UPS, FedEx, DHL
- City, county, or state employees
Of course, tipping should not come at the expense of your own financial wellness. I know a few people who are on the receiving end of tips every year, and they swear that when a client doesn’t tip, it doesn’t bother them. While I suspect there may be more to that story, it at least shows that not tipping at the end of the year is also expected — and handled discreetly.
