With both parents working, the biggest obstacle most families face is paying for childcare. And even if a family can meet that financial requirement, a stay-at-home mom still needs to think about what lies 5 or 10 years down the road. Luckily, there are many things you can do to stay on top of the game.

  • Build new skills: Whether it be organizing a fundraiser or chaperoning 10 kindergartners on a field trip, your child’s journey growing up is also an opportunity for you to develop new and useful skills.
  • Go back to school: Community colleges generally offer daytime and nighttime classes. Courses of study include things like Associates degrees in the liberal arts and sciences, to specialized certificate programs – including areas of study that lend themselves to working from home.
  • Regularly update your social media: Just because you don’t go to the office everyday doesn’t mean you can’t share interesting articles, or even your own blog, on sites like LinkedIn.
  • Work from home: A stay-at-home mom can still work – and companies are hiring them! Websites like Elance are designed to help freelancers find clients and vice versa. Writers, bookkeepers and event planners are just a few examples of the positions that are currently in demand.

And lastly, don’t hesitate to reinvent yourself! There is no rule that says once you choose a career, you can never change it. Virtually every job imparts new skills to the employee, skills which can be adjusted and expanded upon to create innovative ideas and fresh opportunities.

Being a mother and building a career are each admirable – but they do not have to be mutually exclusive. What role(s) are you currently playing?
