5 Easy Ways to Get More Organized By Judy Heft

Being organized comes with so many benefits, it should really be right up there with meditating and working out on the self-care pyramid. Besides enabling you to do more by freeing up more time, it leaves you feeling better about your job and your life because last-minute surprises aren’t so stressful when you’ve got your act together. Below is a short list of steps you can take to get more or better organized.

  • Be a minimalist. Purging helps you stay organized.  I was talking to a friend of mine who was telling me that she rents her house out on airbnb in the winter. I asked her what she does about her valuables. She said she’s a minimalist, that’s why she can do it. Besides, I think it’s important to remember our kids don’t want our stuff after we’re gone. Especially the dark brown, wooden furniture with that 1980s nautical theme.
  • Don’t buy stuff just because it’s on sale. Ask yourself, “Can I live without it?” Sometimes to answer this question I leave the store or the website and then go back to it. Sometimes I have a change of heart and realize I don’t need it. It’s even easier online; I put stuff in my cart and when I go back to it I realize I don’t want it after all.
  • Don’t resist the list. You need a to-do list, especially if you think you don’t. Lists create order, make it easier to prioritize, and help you delegate to an assistant — or even just to your family. (It’s only child labor if you get caught!)
  • Delegate the “weedy” things on your to do list. I call these types of tasks weeds because they prevent other things from growing. There will always be some weeds that you don’t want to do yourself, so try to delegate those things. Stick to the plan by doing one thing at a time, don’t get distracted.
  • Choose a time and a place for everything. These days it’s getting harder and harder to do deep work because of intrusions like text messages, emails, or phone calls — but there are ways of dealing with all that. For example, I know a lot of really successful people who only check their emails once or twice a day. Some even have a set time for going on social media. What organization!
